Connecting Communities: The Falkland Islands was a project created and led by our Square UK team highlighting our sellers in the Falklands, and Square’s endeavor to get them connected to accept credit card and digital payments. I was tasked with creating an editorially styled, digital experience that would showcase the beautiful documentary photos and videos made from this trip and give visitors to the site a sense of what the Falklands are like, from the breathtaking nature and remote location to the everyday challenges that all business owners share.

Since this work was done at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, I could not go to the Falkland Islands (of course). So I “toured” the Falklands by looking at all the photos I could and “walking” down the street on Google Maps. I was inspired by the architecture and old world lettering I saw there, and brought those inspirations into the design. I used an arch window motif, that I saw on many of the historical buildings, and used a thinner, more vintage looking serif typeface (Cambon Light, one of Square’s house fonts at the time) to nod to the beautiful antique lettering I saw on vintage signs and buildings.

I wrote a blog post about my design process for this project, on Square’s Design blog.
